The chilly, lifeless air in the hallways stung as Mara and Aveline ran through the lower levels of the facility. Their footsteps echoed loudly on the concrete floors. The sound of people chasing them was getting closer—heavy boots thudding steadily behind them. Mara’s chest rose and fell quickly with each breath, her heart pounding as adrenaline rushed through her body. She could hear voices shouting, the faint crackle of radios, and footsteps speeding up in their direction.
Aveline didn’t slow down. She kept running, leading them through the twisting hallways without missing a beat. She seemed to know exactly where to go, every move she made was deliberate and precise. Mara felt lost and confused. How had Aveline been inside this place for so long without getting caught? How many others had tried before her, only to disappear or be thrown away?
